At this year’s Chicago Midwinter Meeting, 3DISC is showcasing the latest updates to the Heron IOS, the company’s flagship intraoral scanning solution. Dental Tribune International spoke with Thomas Weldingh, 3DISC CEO, about how the company is aiming to cater for practices interested in digital dentistry.

Mr. Weldingh, would you please take us through the products that 3DISC is highlighting at the 2020 Chicago Midwinter Meeting?
In Chicago, we are showcasing our Heron IOS intraoral scanner with its updated HeronClinic software. This software now has several new features, one of which is a colored distance map that allows practitioners to visualize the distance between the upper and lower jaws for a quick estimation of the site preparation shape. These values can easily be adjusted through an intuitive touch-screen interface that can be set up with ease.

In addition, the software comes with a new feature called “Open Jaws” that provides clinicians with the ability to open and examine the patient’s jaw from the occlusal side. It’s particularly useful in combination with the colored distance map.

There is also a new option that allows clinicians to manually adjust the patient’s bite alignment, which is then sent to the lab and can easily be verified by the dentist.

In addition to these new software functionalities, we have designed new scanning tips with a high resistance to autoclaving. And I’m happy to announce that we have several more software functions in the works that are set to be released later in the year.

3DISC demonstrated its new HeronCloud software at the 2019 Greater New York Dental Meeting. How does it work, and what has the feedback been?
HeronCloud is an online case exchange tool through which Heron IOS users can upload cases. It’s very easy to register for and is easy to navigate for both the dentist and lab thanks to its clean user interface. A very nice feature of HeronCloud is its built-in 3D viewer, which allows users to check images from all angles before downloading. The feedback from our customers has been great—it’s been very well received to this point.

How does the Heron IOS stand out from other intraoral scanning solutions?
The Heron IOS represents the best value-for-money solution available on the market today. It consists of a lightweight, durable handpiece with probably the fastest-working and most user-friendly interface in the industry—an interface that allows for case management, scanning validation and order submission through HeronCloud.

What kinds of dental practices does 3DISC aim to cater to?
We generally aim for sole practitioners and small to medium-sized dental practices, which together constitute the largest part of the market. Specific groups that we are targeting are clinicians who currently have analog workflows, but want to transition into digital dentistry, and dental practices that are looking to grow their digital solutions.
